Swap Magazine is a beauty publication

that offers product "swaps" or alternatives for current trending products, aiming to minimize environmental damage without asking consumers to sacrifice quality or aesthetics. The beauty industry is well-known as one of the leading causes of pollution and harm due primarily to plastic packaging, overconsumption, and hazardous ingredients.

The research for this project focused on a variety of products ranging from skincare to makeup and hair care, creating a unique editorial issue for the modern consumer that provides high-quality, trendy beauty product recommendations. The aim of this concept is to not force a full switch towards clean, sustainable beauty brands—as this is not realistic for most—but rather to provide a guideline for small changes that are of minimal effort to the consumer, but of large impact on the environment.

A significant gap was identified in the market between popular, high-quality products and "green-marketed" products. Swap Magazine is meant to bridge that gap. Built on the belief that a small step is better than no step at all, the publication inspires readers to view environmental responsibility through a simpler lens that can positively influence a wider range of their daily habits. The narrative follows a brief introduction to the topic before diving fully into beauty content, designed to drift away from traditional "green beauty" stereotypes. The chosen format is a printed, collectible hard-cover paired with a digital platform designed to appeal to a younger audience. It uses a colored-tab system for simple, satisfying navigation as well as hand-crafted artistic elements like clear title pages and mirrored paper.

Swap Magazine is a student project printed and hand-assembled by the design team. A website was mocked up and an identical digital version of the magazine was created with Adobe XD & distributed via QR codes for free access.
